Although the legality of sport betting is still a matter of debate, some states have begun to allow it. Sport betting is legal in Iowa since 2019 in both offline and online betting. and Gaming Commission supervises the industry and the licensing fee is borne by the online operator. In Michigan sports betting is legal online as well as in retail casinos. The program was introduced in three casinos in March 2020, a month before the Coronavirus pandemic. Mississippi has also played around with betting on sports events but has not yet accepted mobile betting.

The repeal of PASPA resulted in a surge of business and legislative momentum. As of late, four major American sports leagues are partnering with betting companies for sports. Some have even established official channels for sports betting. Nevada is a notable exception. The payouts for sports betting have always been based on the results. PASPA has banned both in-person and online betting, with the exception of Nevada. However, betting apps for sports allow users to make payments and register betting decisions and act as digital clearinghouses for payouts or bet calls.
